What Is Autism?

A respectful introduction to autism, individual differences and support needs.

What is autism?

Autism is a neurodevelopmental condition associated with differences in social communication, sensory processing, patterns of interest, routines and behaviour. Autism is described as a spectrum because people can have very different strengths, challenges and support needs.

Autistic people are individuals

Some autistic people use spoken language while others communicate through AAC, gestures, signs or other methods. Some need substantial support with daily living while others live independently. A diagnosis does not tell you everything about a person.

Strengths and support needs

Useful support considers both strengths and barriers. Interests, memory, attention to detail, visual learning, honesty, persistence and deep expertise can all be meaningful strengths for some autistic people. Support needs may involve communication, sensory regulation, flexibility, executive functioning, daily living, safety or social participation.

Individualized support matters

There is no single autism strategy that works for everyone. Support should reflect the person’s communication style, preferences, environment, goals and quality of life. Explore our caregiver resources and communication tools for practical ideas.
