Support communication with visual, AAC and everyday interaction strategies.
People communicate in many ways, including speech, gestures, signs, writing, picture systems, communication devices and behaviour. Effective support starts by recognizing the communication a person already uses and expanding access to reliable ways to express needs, choices and ideas.
Choice boards, core-word boards, first-then supports, visual prompts and speech-generating devices can all be helpful when matched to the individual. The goal is functional communication that works across everyday situations.
Communication grows when it produces meaningful results. Build opportunities around preferred activities, choices and real needs. Respond consistently so the learner experiences communication as useful.
Whenever possible, use common symbols and strategies at home, school and community activities. Pair communication tools with visual schedules and caregiver coaching for greater consistency.
